Berlin is a beautiful city of culture, politics, media and science and technology. Its economy is based on high-tech firms and the service sector,and it holds a diverse range of creative industries, research facilities, and convention venues. Berlin serves as a continental hub for air and rail traffic and has a highly complex public transportation network. Significant industries also include IT, pharmaceuticals, bio medical engineering, clean tech, biotechnology, construction and electronics. The city has a high density of internationally renowned research institutions, such as the Fraunhofer Society, the Leibniz Association, the Helmholtz Association, and the Max Planck Society, which are independent of, or only loosely connected to its universities. In 2012, around 65,000 professional scientists were working in research and development in the city. Berlin is one of the most innovative communities of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The KIC is based at the Center for Entrepreneurship at TU Berlin and has a focus in the development of IT industries. It partners with major multinational companies such as Siemens, Deutsche Telekom, and SAP.
